14-year-old Boy in Critical Condition After Being Pinned Under Overturned School Bus in NJ
At least 13 passengers were sent to the hospital Monday after a school bus carrying 31 people overturned and landed on its side in New Jersey.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said the collision happened on the Garden State Parkway (GSP) side near Montvale.
"A school bus driven by Joseph Itzkowitz, a 44-year-old man from Lakewood, NJ, was heading north on the GSP based on an initial investigation," the New Jersey State Police said in a statement. "The bus veered off the right side of the road and overturned near milepost 170.5."
Thirteen other adolescents suffered minor injuries, the driver suffered moderate injuries, and a juvenile passenger suffered critical injuries as a result of the collision and is in critical condition.
According to a
Facebook post by Mayor Mike Ghassali, the juvenile is a 14-year-old boy who is fighting for his life this morning after being pinned under the overturned bus on the Parkway.
Woodcliff Lake Fire Department was the first to arrive at the scene, coming from another fire call, and assisted the
Montvale Volunteer Fire Department and other firefighters in lifting the bus to rescue the boy and the other 28 boys and two adults.
The
Paramus Fire Department dispatched a heavy-duty tow vehicle to provide additional support. Our Tri-Boro Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded promptly to the scene.
Rockland Hatzoloh Ambulance Corps transported all 13 boys to local hospitals.
