According to Toms River Police Department, a 28 year old Toms River man died early Saturday. November 26, 2022.
A motor vehicle accident involving an entrapment was reported at about 2:25 AM, and police and EMS were called to the intersection of Hooper Avenue and South Shore Drive. When they got there, they discovered the car in the swamp, on its side, with its passengers trapped inside.
The driver, Paolo Helfers-Lariva, 28, of Toms River, was trapped and submerged in the water, the two passengers, however, were unharmed and were able to release themselves. In an effort to release the driver, several officers dive into the water.
The driver is eventually freed with help from Silverton EMS and Silverton Fire Department, and CPR is started right away. After numerous attempts, Mr. Helfers-Lariva was pronounced at Community Medical Center after being transferred there.
According to the preliminary inquiry, the car was moving south on Hooper Avenue at a high speed when it lost control, fled the road, hit a post, and then overturned in a marsh. The CSI Unit of the Ocean County Sheriff's Department also provided assistance at the scene. Corporal Terry Warren, the Toms River traffic safety officer, is still looking into the collision.
