Toms River Council Set to Vote on Lowering Speed Limit
The speed limit is 35 mph for much of Cedar Grove Road, but it increases to 40 mph heading towards Charles Drive and Hooper Avenue after passing Cedar Grove Elementary School, where it drops to 25 mph while students and parents cross during the school day.
There are busy intersections along Cedar Grove Road and adjoining streets where drivers constantly come and go during the day and, to some extent, at night.
According to a Toms River Township Council ordinance, Cedar Grove Road will soon have a uniform speed limit along its entire length.
The ordinance, which was introduced at the Jan. 25 council meeting, would reduce the speed limit on a portion of the road from 40 to 35 mph.
The change is the result of a request from Ocean County Engineer John Ernst in late December, which was prompted by an investigation into crash data along the road after a resident complained about speeding along the road, which includes two sections, one from Hooper Avenue across Bay Avenue to a dead end, and the other from just north of the dead end to France Street.
Ernst wrote to the township on December 28 that the county's investigation found that a speed survey and an analysis of crash data did not support lowering the speed from 35 mph, but that the county did support lowering the speed from 40 mph on the stretch from Hooper Avenue to Clifton Avenue to make the speed limit consistent.
The resident complained about the stretch around Edken Avenue, which is currently restricted to 40 mph.
The ordinance's second reading and final vote are scheduled for the Feb. 8 council meeting.
