Many accounts claim that on Wednesday afternoon, a whale's body was observed floating off the coast of Seaside Heights.

According to Clean Ocean Action, which claimed to have been contacted by Seaside Park Mayor John Peterson Jr. late on Wednesday morning, the whale was floating about a mile offshore.

The dead whale is the most recent in a string that has been spotted or washed up on New Jersey beaches since December.

Federal and local politicians called for a moratorium on offshore wind projects off the coast after a juvenile humpback that washed up in Manasquan on February 13 sparked a rally in Point Pleasant Beach that weekend. They were concerned that preliminary activities are contributing to the whales' deaths.

It's a very, very sad day, not just for us in Seaside Park, but I think for everyone along the Jersey Shore and really throughout the entire state of New Jersey, the mayor of Seaside Park stated. "Whales are communicating with humans. And I believe that the message is crystal clear: we need to pause and put an end to what we're doing. This substantial increase in the number of whale and dolphin deaths throughout the beaches over the past few months is the result of something being done differently in the ocean."
