Tragically, the hunt for a teen who vanished while swimming in a lake in Southern New Jersey came to an end.
According to a statement on
Facebook from Pitman, New Jersey Mayor, the body of 18-year-old Victor Rodriguez, a senior at Pitman High School, was discovered at Alcyon Lake on Monday, according to authorities.
Around nine o'clock on Sunday, a dive team from Camden County and marine teams from Deptford arrived at the scene to search Alcyon Lake on Cedar and West Holly avenues.
Officials said that an 18-year-old
Pitman High School student and a friend attempted to swim across the lake, but the teen submerged and did not resurface.
The teen was identified as Victor Rodriguez in a statement issued by school officials on Monday afternoon.
"It is with deep regret that we inform you about a recent loss to our school community. Earlier today, we learned that Victor Rodriguez, a senior at Pitman High School, passed away after a recent drowning incident. On behalf of the board of education, administration, and staff, we offer our sincerest condolences to Victor's family and friends," said Superintendent Steven Crispin.
According to officials, the other male swimmer who was with the adolescent made an effort to save his friend but was unsuccessful.
According to Ryan Pierson, deputy emergency manager coordinator for the Borough of Pitman, "another bystander tried as well, and they called 911."
The lake is tricky to navigate, according to the police. In some places, it is almost 10 feet deep, and the vegetation is dense. Swimming is prohibited.
On Wednesday, Rodriguez was scheduled to graduate.
This is very heartbreaking. However, we are fortunate to have such a close-knit community and high school, according to Pitman Mayor Michael Razze.
