According to an announcement made by Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, John Zinkoski, 41, of Beachwood, turned himself in to the Ocean County Sheriff's Office on August 22, 2023, in the presence of his attorney, in connection with charges of Vehicular Homicide and Strict Liability Vehicular Homicide, in relation to a car accident that killed Judi Smith, 59, of Browns Mills on May 12, 2023, in Plumsted Township.
On August 8, 2023, Zinkoski was accused of committing these crimes, and on that day, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Officers from the Plumsted Township Police Department were called to the intersection of Pinehurst Road and Long Swamp Road on May 12, 2023, at around 5:50 p.m., for a report of a significant auto accident.
According to the results of an investigation by the Plumsted Township Police Department, Zinkoski's Nissan Frontier was driving south on Pinehurst Road when it collided with Ms. Smith's Volvo XC6, which was making an attempt to turn right onto Pinehurst Road. Ms. Smith died as a result of her injuries after being taken to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood after the collision caused her to sustain serious injuries.
Zinkoski received treatment for his injuries after being transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.
Zinkoski's blood was drawn at the hospital for the first time, and the results of the lab test showed that his BAC at the time of the accident was higher than the legal limit.
An operator of a motor vehicle in the state of New Jersey is deemed to be intoxicated for purposes of driving if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is.08 or above.
The findings of the laboratory tests also showed that Zinkoski's blood at the time of the crash contained benzodiazepines and cocaine. Further investigation by the Plumsted Township Police Department and the Vehicular Homicide Unit of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office revealed that Zinkoski's car was moving at an average speed of 86 miles per hour when the accident occurred.
Upon his surrender to the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office, Zinkoski was transported to the Ocean County Jail, where he is presently lodged pending a detention hearing.
