Toms River Fire Company 1 is Organizing the Memorial Service.
On September 11, 2023, Toms River will have its yearly memorial to remember those lost in the terrorist attacks on the United States in 2001.
The service will take place at the firefighter memorial at the intersection of
Robbins Street and Washington Street on
Monday at 9:30 a.m. it is being hosted by
Toms River Fire Company 1.In the suicide strikes carried out by 19 militants affiliated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaida, about 3,000 people died, including two from Toms River. On September 11, 2001, two planes were flown into the World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York City, and then a third plane crashed into the Pentagon. In Shanksville, Pennsylvania, passengers who discovered their flight had been hijacked brought down a fourth plane in a field.
According to History.com, when American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 crashed at the World Trade Center, 2,763 people perished, including 343 firefighters and paramedics, 23 New York City police officers, and 37 Port Authority police officers.
At the Pentagon, 189 people were killed, including 64 on American Airlines Flight 77, the airliner that struck the building. Prior to reaching its destination, United Flight 93 crashed at Shanksville, killing 44 individuals on board.
Speeches are given at the ceremony, and the firefighter's bell is rung to signal the completion of their service.
