Tragic Blaze Leaves Two Toms River Families Homeless
According to Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention two families were left without a place to live after a fire on Saturday afternoon which badly damaged a home on Bergen Avenue in Toms River.
Chief inspector Matthew Janora of the Toms River Fire Prevention Bureau stated that when firefighters arrived at the two-story house shortly after 2:00 p.m., they discovered that flames were originating from the second floor.
Despite being at home at the time, the family managed to flee safely. After the fire was put out, two of their cats—one on the first level and one on the second—were discovered to be still alive. Janora said that "both appeared OK and in good health." As a precaution, they were being brought to a veterinarian for assessment.
Firefighters spent 1.5 hours at the house after the fire was swiftly put out, but the home sustained heavy smoke, heat, and fire damage to both floors and the home is not safe for occupancy. The home has been posted as an unsafe structure by the Toms River Township Building Department.
There are two GoFundMe campaigns set up to help the two mothers.
Jenn Mosson, the person who started a campaign to aid her best friend and her two kids, stated the family lost everything, including food, beds, shoes, clothes, and food. Anyone who would like to assist is welcome to donate to the
GoFundMe effort.
Melissa Kulyeshie launched the second
GoFundMe account on behalf of her sister, who is the mother of a 3-month-old child.
"She’s a single mom and has worked so hard to make a life for herself," Kulyeshie said. "She needs to start from scratch for herself and her son," and she also has other children whose possessions were there.
