Beaches in Toms River

Ortley Beach, NJ

ORTLEY BEACH - Is located in Ocean County, Toms River and is also known as Dover Beaches South.

It is not that large, in fact, its less than a square mile in area but that does not stop the tourists from visiting during the summer months. Ortley Beach is located between the Borough of Lavallette and the Borough of Seaside Heights.

Ortley Beach will have lifeguards on duty on weekends starting Memorial Day weekend. Lifeguards are on duty every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from June 15 through Labor Day.

When there are no lifeguards on duty, visitors are encouraged to swim at their own risk. Ortley Beach has showers and restrooms, but no changing areas. Beach badges are purchased by visitors and must always be worn on the front of swimsuits. The Ortley Beach Lifeguard Headquarters, located on the boardwalk, sells badges.

LIFEGUARDS Memorial Day weekend the lifeguards begin their season. They are on duty only on the weekends for the first few weeks of the season, then operate daily from June 15th through Labor Day.

You should pay attention to any warnings or directions the lifeguards provide. If you go swimming when the lifeguards are not on the beach - off season or during off hours in the summer - you need to be careful. You should know about riptides and what to do if you find yourself caught in one.

The Toms River's Shelter Cove

Situated directly across the Toms River from West Point Island and Lavalette, Shelter Cove Park is situated on the eastern bank of the river. There's a nice sandy beach at the park's eastern edge. Nearby are some of Toms River's nicest communities, which have a large number of waterfront residences with exclusive boat slips.

The park's eastern parking lot, which is closest to the shore, is located at 1 Bay Avenue. Along with a playground, there are a few sand volleyball courts and bleachers available for spectators at the beach. Dogs are not permitted on the beach, and there are no lifeguards on duty.

Families and couples who choose to spend the day at Shelter Cove Park will find many more services at the western parking lot, which is located further from the beach.

The expansive, grassy fields can accommodate soccer goals and a few tiny baseball diamonds. It features multiple public tennis courts that are first-come, first-served, and a sizable children's playground.
