This Memorial Day weekend, visitors to the Jersey Shore will have to deal with new regulations that limit the use of beach canopies and tents.

In order to make it easier for lifeguards and paramedics to navigate over the sand in the event of an emergency, officials said they are working to improve lifeguards' views of the sand and ocean.

As usual, it's advisable to be aware of the sand rules before visiting your preferred location. According to NJ.com, here are a list of beaches and their rules:
  • Barnegat Light - There are no rules against tents or canopies in Barnegat Light.

  • Bay Head - There are no rules against tents or canopies in Bay Head.

  • Beach Haven - Allowed: “Sunshades” that do not have grounding lines, ropes or sides, baby tents smaller than 40 inches by 40 inches by 40 inches.
    Not Allowed: Pop-up tents without a special events permit.

  • Brick - Allowed: Umbrellas.
    Not Allowed: Any tents with more than two sides obstructed and any structure supported by ropes or stakes.

  • Island Beach State Park - only single pole umbrellas and a maximum of 3'x3'x3' shade shelter for small children are allowed.

  • Lavallette - Allowed: Umbrellas, “baby tents,” canopy-style sunshades smaller than 10′x10′ without walls or screens.
    Not Allowed: Any canopies or tents with walls or screens, or cabanas.

  • Ortley Beach - Allowed: Umbrellas, baby tents, canopy chairs and playpens.
    Not Allowed: Large tents or canopies.

  • Seaside Heights - Allowed: Umbrellas, baby tents, canopy style sun shades, “sport-brellas.”
    Not Allowed: Tents, tarps, canopies larger than 12 feet by 12 feet, canopies with walls or screens, cabanas or pavilions.

  • Seaside Park - Allowed: Umbrellas, baby tents, canopy style sun shades, “sport-brellas.”
    Not Allowed: Tents, tarps, canopies larger than 12 feet by 12 feet, canopies with walls or screens, cabanas or pavilions.

  • No tents, canopies & umbrellas on jersey shore beaces

    According to Island Beach State Park, for the safety of their staff and visitors, only single pole umbrellas and a maximum of 3'x3'x3' shade shelter for small children are allowed.

    Pop-up type canopies are still allowed in Mobile Sport Fishing Vehicle areas and where you can walk on the beach south of the swimming areas. Tents are not allowed anywhere in the park.

    Please also be aware that swimming is only permitted in the Swimming Areas when lifeguards are on duty.
