NJ Braces for Storms Following Intense Heat Wave

According to the National Weather Service, the heat index hit triple digits today. A heat advisory was in effect for a large portion of the state from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today. A warning of excessive heat was in effect for parts of Central and South Jersey. According to the National Weather Service, it felt as high as 106 degrees in some places.

The National Weather Service stated, "The other main concern tonight is the potential for thunderstorms, some of which could possibly be severe."

Thunderstorms are most likely this evening, and the National Weather Service described the severe danger as "very conditional," with the possibility of damaging gusts and small hail.

According to NBC4, the biggest risks from nighttime storms are expected to be damaging straight-line winds and large hail; although there is a small chance of hail up to an inch in diameter.

There may be more chances of thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday as there will be a cooling.

Severe Weather Risk

If storms do occur, they may become severe. There is still a slight risk that extends through the city and up into the Hudson Valley, but the most serious threat is located south and west of the city, primarily in Central and South Jersey.

The main concerns for any severe storms that do form are huge hail and devastating winds. Winds pose a more significant and pervasive hazard out of the two, particularly to the city and its environs. Power lines and tree branches might be toppled by gusts that could reach speeds of more than fifty miles per hour.

The largest storms have the potential to produce hail up to one inch in diameter, which could lead to property damage such hood dimples or shattered windshields in cars.

Damaging Hail in NJ

Wednesday night's storms bring with them a sharp drop in temperature and humidity. Expect temperatures to drop by nearly 20 degrees as the workweek comes to an end.
