Teen Injured in Ocean County Crash, Man Airlifted to Hospital
According to Manchester Police Department, on Tuesday, December 3, at around 6:19 p.m., Manchester police arrived at the intersection of Ocean County roads 547 and 571, according to a news release from the department. The incident caused significant front-end damage to two vehicles.
Officers discovered a white 2022 Nissan Altima on the side of County Route 547 and a blue 2004 BMW facing south in the northeast corner of the intersection.
The BMW was traveling north on County Route 547 when it struck the Nissan Altima, according to investigators. The driver was a Manchester teenager. Driving east on County Route 571, the 39-year-old driver of the Nissan attempted to turn left onto County Route 547 North.
The BMW spun 180 degrees and collided with a traffic light pole before stopping as a result of the incident. After being pushed off the road, the Nissan came to a rest on the west side of County Route 547.
The man suffered internal injuries "primarily to the front of his body." He was rushed by helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
The teenager was transported to Community Medical Center by ambulance after suffering "extensive" leg injuries. The status of both drivers was listed as steady.
"Failure to observe the traffic signal" seemed to be the primary cause of the collision, according to the preliminary inquiry.
For several hours, the intersection was closed while emergency personnel cleared the area and conducted their investigation. Along with paramedics from Manchester and RWJBarnabas Health, firefighters from Manchester and Ridgeway also arrived on the scene.
Investigations into the crash are still ongoing.
