Widespread Power Outage in Toms River
The opening of several Toms River Schools on Wednesday has been delayed due to a significant power outage that were affecting traffic signals.
Schools in Tier 2, 3 and 4 had a 90 minute delayed opening.
According to
JCP&L spokesman Chris Hoenig, crews worked steadily in the pre-dawn hours to restore power after the outage was first reported at around 3:40 a.m. The last customers in Berkley Township were back online by 7 a.m. By 8:30 a.m., the last 4,000 Toms River clients had returned.
The outage resulted from "a trip of a high-voltage line that took one of the substations in Toms River offline," said Chris Hoenig, a JCP&L spokesmans.
At a sub station in Manchester's Whiting neighborhood, there was an equipment malfunction. This sub station supplies power to another sub station in the Toms River area of Manitou Park. The line is being further isolated by crews.
Numerous traffic lights were out, including those on Route 37, according to
Toms River police.
