Bitter Cold Conditions Expected Across New Jersey
According to forecasters, the Garden State is seeing some of the coldest temperatures in years this week, in addition to the coldest temperatures so far this winter.
The Arctic polar vortex, a sizable region of cold air and low pressure encircling the North Pole, is to blame for this cold weather. The vortex can move farther south during the winter, as it is now, when the jet stream permits, pelting the United States with icy air. The
National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory for the entire state through 12 p.m. on Wednesday, predicting wind chills as low as 10 below zero. Frostbite can develop in just a few minutes under such circumstances.
This low temperature was last recorded in the region in December 2022.
The National Weather Service predicts that wind chills on Wednesday will only be in the teens.
According to
National Weather Service forecasters, Thursday will begin cold but warm up throughout the day, reaching the 30s along the coast and the 20s elsewhere.
Temperatures will be back to normal for this time of year by Sunday and Monday, reaching the mid-30s. Conditions will not be as hazardous as they are now, but it won't be warm by any means.
