According to authorities, a Toms River surgeon lost his life Thursday after his vehicle veered off the Garden State Parkway in Lakewood.

Employees at Jarrod P. Kaufman's medical clinic reported Friday morning that the 54-year-old founder of Brick's Premier Surgical died in the collision that occurred close to milepost 88.2 northbound.

Kaufman's Tesla Model Y went off the road into a briar patch at approximately 7:10 a.m. on Thursday, according to New Jersey State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron's statement on Friday.
According to Lebron, Kaufman had a medical episode and was declared deceased at the scene of the collision. Investigations into the crash are still ongoing.

In addition to being affiliated with Ocean University Medical Center in Brick and Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood, Kaufman was a founding member of Premier Surgical and Premier Vein Center in Brick.
Kaufman, a general and laparoscopic surgeon, was a founding member of Brick's Premier Surgical and Premier Vein Center. He was also connected to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood and Ocean University Medical Center in Brick.

His Linked In page states that he was president of Hernia surgery for the Underserved, which led surgical humanitarian trips "dedicated to helping educate foreign surgeons and treat underserved populations for inguinal hernia repair."
Kaufman "dedicated his career to the study and development of innovative procedures and treatments." He addresses complex hernias, anorectal disorders, wound care, minimally invasive venous operations, minimally invasive surgery, and surgical oncology in his private practice, according to the McGowan profile.

Additionally, Kaufman was the chairman of surgery at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus Hospital and a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Temple University School of Medicine.
Additionally, Kaufman was the emeritus chair of the NJ Governor's Task Force on Cancer Prevention, Early Detection & Treatment Melanoma Workgroup and the New Jersey chair of the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer.

He received his bachelor's degree in biology from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1993. He then went on to Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel, where he graduated in May 1997 with a medical degree.
