Man Arrested After Girlfriend's Body Discovered
in Fridge in NJ State Forest
More than a month after the victim's body was found in a refrigerator at a state forest, authorities announced Wednesday that a Camden County man had been charged with his girlfriend's murder.
On January 29, Runnemede resident
Christopher Blevins, 45, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Laura Hughes' passing. Blevins was accused of obstructing apprehension and desecrating human remains.
Since the middle of January, Blevins has been detained in San Diego, California. According to the
Camden County Prosecutor's Office, his extradition to New Jersey is still pending.
According to authorities, Hughes' body was found inside a refrigerator at Belleplain State Forest in Cape May County on December 22. Investigators were unable to identify the victim for several weeks.
She was fifty years old.
The time and manner of Hughes' alleged death have not been disclosed by authorities. However, authorities previously stated that they think the refrigerator containing her body was transported to the forest during the summer.
According to
The Philadelphia Inquirer, Blevins' pickup truck was stopped by automatic license plate readers in Sea Isle City and Long Beach Township in late July while carrying a refrigerator-shaped object.
According to the Inquirer, investigators later discovered a calendar with the days marked "x" until July 24 in the house Blevins and Hughes shared, along with blue ratchet straps and a gun.
An affidavit into Blevins's arrest stated that the refrigerator was strapped with blue ratchets and wrapped in a sleeping bag.
Citing an affidavit of probable cause,
NJ.com reported that Blevins fled to Mexico on August 2 and turned himself in to Mexican authorities on August 27.
According to the report, he told them that he may have killed someone in a bar fight and that he had been involved in a "violent incident" in Runnemede and "panicked."
In Cape May County, the man was charged on January 3 with third-degree obstructing apprehension and second-degree desecrating human remains.
Blevins was taken into custody in San Diego on January 13.
