Island Heights Man Accused of Not Registering as a Megan’s Law Offender

According to the Ocean County Prosecutors Office, an Island Heights resident has been charged with not registering as a sex offender after he crashed into the borough's boardwalk.

Following the collision on February 16, Island Heights police reported that 42-year-old Asa D. Williams was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

According to the prosecutor's office, authorities later discovered that Williams, a registered sex offender, had relocated from Long Branch to the borough and neglected to notify both towns of the address change.

The New Jersey State Police sex offender registry has Williams classified as a Tier 2 offender. His conviction for a sexual offense is not mentioned in the registry information.

According to the prosecutor's office, Megan's Law mandates that certain sexual offenders register with the local police departments whenever they relocate or change their place of employment.

It is a third-degree crime to fail to do so.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office charged Williams with notifying law enforcement of an address change because he was supposed to notify Long Branch police and also failed to report it to Island Heights police, according to Billhimer.

According to jail records, Williams was arrested on February 28 and taken to the Ocean County Jail; he has since been released pending additional court proceedings.

According to the prosecutor's office, anyone with pertinent information about this case or other people breaking Megan's Law requirements should call Detective Alex Dasti at the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office at 732-929-2027, ext. 3458.
