Compassion Shown for Families After Fatal Crash on Route 37
The Toms River community has been coming together to support the victims' families as investigators continue to look into the Route 37 incident that killed two individuals and seriously injured two more on Friday.
According to the
authorities, a speeding BMW driven by an unlicensed teen struck their Toyota Camry at the intersection of Routes 37 and 166, killing Evan Fiore, 23, and his girlfriend Kiley Armstrong, 21. Kiley's twin sister, Krista Armstrong, 21, and her boyfriend, Ryan Chapman, 19, were critically injured in the collision.
As of Tuesday morning, approximately $140,000 had been received through a
GoFundMe account started by Ryan Chapman's stepbrother Cole Crozier and Evan Fiore's close friend Brady Bryson to help with Ryan and Krista's medical bills and Evan and Kiley's burial costs.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced on Saturday that the teenager who was operating the BMW was charged with two counts of aggravated manslaughter, four counts of aggravated assault causing bodily injury while eluding, two counts of death by auto, two counts of causing death while driving without a license, two counts of causing injury while driving without a license, two counts of aggravated assault manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life, eluding, and four counts of assault by auto.
Officials at the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office were unable to provide any further details about the investigation after the case was passed to them on Monday.
Authorities have not identified the adolescent driver or the BMW's occupants, who were both treated and released after the crash.. The
Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center is housing the driver. He was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday morning.
Kiley Armstrong and Evan Fiore died on impact, according to the
GoFundMe campaign set up by Cole Crozier, Ryan Chapman's stepbrother, and Brady Bryson, a close friend of Evan Fiore. The couple had been dating for some time and were anticipated to be getting married, according to the campaign.
Ryan Chapman and Krista Armstrong are in critical condition at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Crozier and Bryson wrote.
Social media users have been furious with the BMW's driver and passengers, calling for harsh punishments for all three. Citing the recent transfer and the practicalities of receiving a thorough briefing on the inquiry, Monmouth County officials declined to comment on the case.
Less than 15 minutes after the white BMW was initially spotted driving east into Seaside Heights over the Thomas A. Mathis Bridge on Route 37, the incident occurred at 10:58 p.m. on Friday, according to investigators.
According to the
Toms River North Marching Mariners booster group, the twins' father had been the club treasurer, and Krista had been in the marching band. The club has been collecting money to cover the Armstrong family's meals.
