Tragic Incident: Construction Worker Killed by Drunk Driver in Ocean County

According to officials, a drunk motorist on Route 9 in Toms River struck and killed a 50-year-old roadside construction worker early Thursday.

According to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, the man was struck by a northbound car at around one in the morning close to the intersection of Raymond Avenue and Route 9.
He passed away at a nearby hospital from his wounds. Authorities have not identified the construction worker.

After exhibiting symptoms of impairment, Douglas Smith, 51, of Toms River, was charged with careless driving and driving while intoxicated, according to the prosecutor's office.

Investigators took a blood draw from Smith at a local hospital. The results of the testing could lead to the filing of additional charges.
