Brick Fire Officials announced on Thursday that the Aldi shop in Brick had to temporarily close due to minor damage caused by a fire in a rooftop air conditioning unit on Wednesday.

The business manager reported the incident shortly before 5 p.m., and one firefighter was slightly hurt battling it, according to the Brick Township Bureau of incident Safety.

Customers and staff were promptly evacuated after the business manager at 780 Route 70 reported smelling smoke, according to fire officials.

Chief Tom Thieme Jr. issued a second alarm to request aid from the Laurelton and Herbertsville fire companies when firefighters from Brick's District 1 fire companies, Breton Woods and Pioneer Hose, arrived and discovered obvious flames emanating from the roof.

According to fire officials, the damage was restricted to the rooftop and the fire was swiftly suppressed. Jersey Shore Fire Response posted a video of the firefighters in action.

According to fire officials, the store was closed for cleanup for the remainder of Wednesday while the Ocean County Health Department responded.

Corporate representatives from Aldi informed the fire safety bureau that before corporate management will allow the store to reopen, certain procedures must be fulfilled. On Thursday, there was no quick response to a message sent to Aldi's corporate offices asking for more information about when the store may reopen.

According to officials, the firefighter received treatment at Ocean University Medical Center before being released.
The fire was under investigation by Assistant Fire Marshal Paul Matula.
