Swimming Bans Issued at Jersey Shore Beaches Due to Rough Seas
Due to hazardous surf conditions and the effects of Hurricane Erin, swimming is prohibited at least four Jersey Shore beaches.
Due to the conditions, swimming was prohibited Monday in Belmar, Monmouth County; Bay Head, Ocean County; and Wildwood, Cape May County. Additionally, Island Beach State Park prohibited access for mobile sport fishing trucks as of 4 p.m.
The
Island Beach State Park Facebook page stated, "We will reevaluate conditions in the morning," according to state representatives. The state park has also prohibited surfing, boogey boarding, and swimming.
Erin and the effects of a nor'easter that slipped up the coast have caused the beach to close, according to a Facebook post from the
Bay Head Improvement Association, which oversees the borough's beaches.
According to the
National Weather Service's 5 p.m. report on Monday, Erin was a Category 4. Over the next few days, it is predicted to create potentially fatal surf and rip currents throughout the majority of the East Coast.
"I'm sure a lot of you are aware of the recent drownings in Seaside Heights and Belmar. The Bay Head organization said, "We ask everyone to use common sense and refrain from entering the water during these dangerous conditions." "This, of course, is of utmost importance after our closing time at 5:25 pm or at any other times when the beach is unguarded."
The police department in Wildwood stated that swimming is prohibited and made it clear that this prohibition extends to after-hours swimming. According to the police department, "The Wildwood Beach Patrol advises everyone to stay out of the water and to heed all warnings,"
