Weekend Weather Alert: Dangerous Rip Currents and Flood Risks

As Hurricane Erin continues to churn offshore, bringing with it severe surf and rip currents, coastal flooding continues to be a serious concern along the Jersey Shore.

As high tide approached Thursday evening, emergency vehicles were positioned on streets that were vulnerable to flooding.

In anticipation of flooding and dangerous surf conditions, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy issued a State of Emergency earlier in the day.
"Dangerous rip tides have been a result of Hurricane Erin's affects along the Jersey Shore during the last few days. Governor Murphy declared in a statement that [Thursday] and [Friday] will not be an exception.

After battering North Carolina's Outer Banks with powerful winds and swells that flooded several locations on the barrier islands, the storm created large waves along the mid-Atlantic coast and started to slowly march out to sea.
Even while experts say the storm will gradually lessen, it will still pose a threat of coastal flooding and deadly rip currents over the weekend. During the previous week, Erin's strength has varied greatly.

As it proceeded northward, nearly parallel to the East Coast, Erin lost part of its intensity on Tuesday and became a Category 2 hurricane. On Thursday, though, its strongest sustained winds were at 100 mph (160 kph). The National Storm Center in Miami warned that Erin might re-emerge as a powerful storm before eventually waning by Friday.

Authorities warned that the water conditions along the East Coast are very perilous, despite the meteorological center's confidence that Erin will not make direct impact in the United States. Check the upcoming weather forecast. Over the weekend take precaution and only swim if allowed and if lifeguards are present.
