According to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, the fire that destroyed Lakewood's Piner Elementary School on Friday night is still being investigated on Saturday.

The fire was reported at the school on East County Line Road at approximately 7:30 p.m.

According to the prosecutor's office, Lakewood firefighters and police who arrived discovered an active structure fire and managed to put it out.
Flames can be seen rising from the building's roof in a video that Jersey Shore Fire Response's Ryan Mack shared on Facebook. According to the report, a number of towns, including Brick, Toms River, Point Pleasant, Jackson, Howell, and Wall Township, responded to the mutual assistance reaction after the three-alarm fire.

The cause and origin of the fire are still being investigated, according to prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.
