Record-Breaking Great White Shark Spotted Near Jersey Shore
As he headed south for the winter, a record-breaking white shark surfaced off the shore of South Jersey on Wednesday night.
The non-profit organization
OCEARCH, which tags sharks to better understand their movement patterns, reports that on November 12, Contender, a 14-foot-9-inch white shark weighing 1,653 pounds, "pinged" miles off the coast of Atlantic City. When the shark's dorsal fin breaches water and transmits location information to the group, this is known as a "ping".
On January 17, 2025, he was initially identified off the coast of Florida and Georgia. He was the largest male white shark that OCEARCH had tagged.
Contender was named in honor of Contender Boats, a longstanding OCEARCH partner.
