NJ Town Shocked as SWAT Team Uncovers Body, Arrests a Suspect
Following a SWAT incident in Somerville on Sunday, a woman was discovered dead and a man inside the house was taken into custody.Police from Somerville and Bridgewater responded to reports of gunfire at a residence on Mastogen Drive at approximately 1:00 p.m.
The residents could not be reached by the officers. According to Francisco Roman Jr., Chief of Detectives in the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office, the Somerset County SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiators were contacted at approximately 2:00 p.m.
SWAT team members entered the house and discovered an adult male after they were still unable to get in touch with the residents. According to Roman Jr., SWAT officers searched the house and discovered a dead woman. Under police escort, the man was transported to a nearby hospital.
Thomas M. Shaulis, age 66, of Somerville, was charged with second-degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose.
According to authorities, Thomas M. Shaulis, 66, had four firearms close to his body.
SWAT officers took Shaulis into arrest right away and took him out of the house. As more SWAT personnel cleared the house, they found a deceased woman on the kitchen floor.
The deceased woman's decay was progressed. Authorities reported that the house had a bed bug infestation and hoarder-like circumstances.
After being brought to a nearby hospital for observation, Shaulis is still there. A search warrant issued by the Superior Court allowed authorities to remove many firearms and ammo from the residence.
Authorities discovered two bullet holes in the exterior of a house on Mastogen Drive close to the Shaulis' residence during a neighborhood canvass.
In order to positively identify the adult woman, ascertain the cause and manner of death, and notify the next of kin, the Northern Regional Medical Examiner's Office will perform a postmortem examination.
Second-degree possession of a firearm for an illegal purpose was the charge brought against Shaulis. After being released from the hospital, Shaulis will be brought to the Somerset County Jail to await a hearing regarding his custody.
