Did You Feel the 2.4 Magnitude Earthquake in New Jersey?
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a small earthquake struck New Jersey on Friday afternoon.
The center of the 2.4-magnitude earthquake, which occurred at 3:43 p.m., on Friday, January 30th was approximately six kilometers outside of Whitehouse Station in Hunterdon County.
As of Friday evening, approximately 200 people had reported that they felt the earthquake, with claims spreading out to Hopatcong, Phillipsburg and Bridgewater.
Although they are typically not felt, earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 or less can be detected with a seismograph. Although they only cause modest damage, events of magnitude 2.5 to 5.4 are frequently felt.
Earthquakes have been detected in other locations of New Jersey over the previous few year, including quakes near Califon, Gladstone, Hasbrouck Heights, Hillsdale and Randolph.
