Car Crashes into Snow Bank in Ocean County After Brakes Stop Working

According to Manchester Police, a man from Ocean County was unhurt after his automobile caught fire after colliding with a bank of snow on Thursday due to a malfunctioning brake.

According to Manchester Capt. Albert Vega, Daryl Rosenblatt, 49, told police that just after 8 a.m. on Thursday, he was traveling north on Renaissance Drive when he felt his 2011 Hyundai Sonota's brakes fail as he got closer to the stop sign at Renaissance Boulevard.

Moreover, Vega reported that Rosenblatt noticed smoke emanating from the front of his vehicle.
According to Vega, Rosenblatt informed police that he went onto Renaissance Boulevard after purposefully crashing into a bank of snow in an attempt to halt the vehicle. According to Vega, Rosenblatt struck a second snow bank on the car's passenger side, causing it to stop just in front of Courtney Lane.

According to Vega, once Rosenblatt exited the vehicle, it started fire.

Rosenblatt was unharmed. According to the police, he was from Toms River, yet his address on the internet is in Berkeley Township.

When police and firefighters arrived, the car was fully enveloped in flames, but the Manchester Volunteer Fire Department, Lakehurst Volunteer Fire Department, Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department, and Manchester Career Fire Department promptly put out the fire."It was not possible to test the brake system or evaluate collision damage because of the amount of the fire damage, according to Vega.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature, he said. Patrolman Sage Sysol is investigating.

"The Manchester Township Police Department would like to thank all responding fire departments for their prompt response and professionalism in quickly extinguishing the fire," Vega said.

In 2014 Hyundai recalled 883,000 Sonatas due to problems with the brake calipers, the Christian Science Monitor reported. A second recall in 2024 was issued for problems with the anti-lock braking system, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
