Coldest Weekend of Winter Set to Impact the Region

With nightly lows in the low single digits on Saturday and Sunday in many parts of the state, this cold weather may be the coldest one yet this winter.

Furthermore, strong wind gusts will occasionally make it feel as cold as 10 to 20 degrees below zero.

Those who are outside with their skin exposed to the cold air run the risk of developing frostbite or overheating when wind chill levels that low are recorded.

The National Weather Service issued extreme cold warnings, a rare weather alert in New Jersey, in all 21 counties due to the hazardous circumstances.

Additionally, high wind warnings are in effect for a number of counties due to the possibility of gusts reaching 50 to 60 mph on Saturday.

Furthermore, much of the state may see an inch or so of snowfall Friday night into early Saturday morning due to a clipper system. Additionally, a few powerful but short-lived snow squalls may form, resulting in blowing snow and impaired road and highway visibility.

There is a 40% to 70% probability of light snowfall Friday night and into the night, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow squalls could form early Saturday morning when an arctic front passes over New Jersey. And the temperature will begin to drop.

Saturday's high temperatures will remain in the teens throughout the majority of the state, with some places just reaching the low 20s. For early February, that is still roughly 20 degrees colder than usual.

Forecasters predict that certain communities in northwest New Jersey may experience sub-zero temperatures, with lows Saturday night and early Sunday morning only a few degrees above zero.

That does not include wind chill.

With daytime highs largely remaining in the teens and nightly lows falling into the single digits, a similar icy picture is starting to take shape for Sunday.
