Tragic South Jersey Fire Leaves Young Man Homeless and Father Dead

CHERRY HILL, NJ — Hazem Abdalla's father meant everything to him. So, when Eid Abdalla developed dementia, Hazem cut his work hours to give him more time to care for his dad.

On the night of Jan. 31, a neighbor told Hazem Abdalla to rush home immediately. He arrived to find the Cherry Hill house that he and his father shared was engulfed in flames.

Eid Abdalla, 69, died in the fire. Hazem says Eid was his only close family member, so the fire left him homeless and without immediate family.

My name is Hazem. Writing this is something I never imagined I would have to do, but I am left with no other choice.

My father immigrated from Egypt to the United States in the 1960s in search of a better life. I was born in Egypt and came to America with him when I was just five years old. From that moment on, it was always just the two of us. He was not only my father , he was my entire family, my best friend, and the reason I am who I am today.

As he grew older, my father developed serious medical conditions, including dementia and other medical conditions. Because of this, I made the decision to work only part-time so I could spend the rest of my time caring for him. Taking care of my father was never a burden; it was my responsibility, my duty, and my honor. Everything I did was for him.

On the night of January 31st, around 10:00 PM, my life changed forever. I received a call from my neighbors telling me to rush home immediately. When I arrived, my house was completely engulfed in flames. My father was trapped inside. He did not survive.

In a matter of minutes, I lost my father in the most tragic way imaginable.

What breaks my heart the most is how completely everything was taken from me. I lost my father, my home, and every possession I had. I’m standing in the world with no immediate family to turn to—only a few close friends and a part‑time job keeping me afloat. I’m homeless right now, without transportation, trying to survive day by day while grieving the loss of the only family I ever truly had. It’s a kind of loneliness and exhaustion that’s hard to put into words, but it’s my reality.

This GoFundMe is being created to help me stand back up when I have been knocked completely to the ground.

The goal is to raise funds to:

• Secure a safe apartment for me and cover rent for one year

• Help me obtain reliable transportation so I can work and rebuild

• Cover funeral and immediate living expenses

• Give me a chance to restart my life after losing everything

I am not asking for luxury. I am asking for stability. A roof over my head. A way to get to work. A chance to heal, grieve, and move forward with dignity.

My father sacrificed everything for me. He worked tirelessly, and his strength shaped my entire life. Losing him has left a hole in my heart that will never be filled, but I am holding on to his memory as I try to move forward.

If you are able to donate, share, or keep me in your prayers, I would be forever grateful. Every single dollar, every share, and every act of kindness truly matters.

From the bottom of my heart thank you for taking the time to read my story and for helping me during the darkest moment of my life.
