A Toms River–area shooting that left a 17‑year‑old hospitalized has led to charges against a juvenile suspect, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer. The incident, which unfolded Wednesday evening at the Ocean County Mall, is now being investigated as an attempted murder.
Shooting Inside Mall Leaves Teen Injured
Police were called to the mall on Hooper Avenue around 8:10 p.m. on March 25, 2026, after reports of a gunshot victim. Officers arrived to find a 17‑year‑old male suffering from a single gunshot wound to the face.
The teen was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he remains in stable condition.
Investigators: Altercation Led to Gunfire
Detectives from multiple agencies—including the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Toms River Police Department, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office CSI Unit—determined that the victim had been sitting in a common area of the mall when he was approached by another individual attempting to start an altercation.
As the suspect began to walk away, investigators say he turned back and fired multiple shots, striking the victim once before fleeing the scene.
Juvenile Suspect Taken Into Custody
A continuing investigation identified a juvenile suspect as the shooter. The individual has since been taken into custody and is being held at the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center.
Due to state law N.J.S.A. 2A:4A‑60, authorities are prohibited from releasing additional information about juveniles charged with delinquent acts.
