Residents across New Jersey are bundling up once again as a blast of cold air brings winter-like conditions back to the region. Despite the calendar turning to spring, temperatures have plunged below freezing in many areas, accompanied by strong, gusty winds that are making it feel even colder.

Meteorologists say overnight lows dipped into the 20s across much of the state, with wind chills dropping into the teens. The combination of cold air and sustained winds has created a biting chill, especially during the early morning and evening hours.
Wind gusts reaching up to 30–40 mph have been reported, knocking around loose objects and making travel more uncomfortable for pedestrians and drivers alike. The blustery conditions are also increasing the risk of minor tree damage and isolated power outages.

The sudden return to winter-like weather is being driven by a cold front that swept through the region, ushering in colder, drier air from the north. While sunshine is expected at times, it will do little to offset the chill due to the persistent winds.

Officials are urging residents to take precautions, including dressing in layers, securing outdoor items, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Drivers are also advised to remain alert, particularly on bridges and overpasses where icy patches could develop during the coldest periods.

The unseasonably cold stretch is expected to continue through the next couple of days before temperatures gradually rebound closer to seasonal averages later in the week.

While spring is still on the horizon, this brief return to winter serves as a reminder that March—and even early April—in New Jersey can still deliver a chill. Stay up-to-date with your local forecast.
