Police Arrest Two Suspects in Ocean County Following Vehicle
Pursuit and Foot Chase
Two people were taken into custody following a late-night traffic stop in Lakewood after the driver fled from the police and both passengers tried to flee into a wooded area, according to the officials. One of the suspects' immigration status has been questioned.
At around 10:55 p.m. on May 1, a Lakewood police officer tried to pull over a car on Cedarbridge Avenue for several moving offenses. Police said that after the driver first slowed down and then accelerated, there was a brief pursuit that was soon stopped because of safety concerns.
The car stopped a short distance later, and the two people inside fled into the surrounding woods. The driver, Ivan Cruz, 41, of Lakewood, was swiftly taken into custody by officers who were pursuing them on foot.
Cruz displayed symptoms of alcohol impairment at the time of his detention, according to the police. He was apprehended without any problems. Several open alcohol containers were found in the car during a later investigation.
A department drone was used by the authorities to help find the second person. Officers located the passenger in the wooded area within minutes. He was identified as
Juan Carlos Ramirez-Hernandez, 33, of Lakewood. He was also apprehended without any problems.
Cruz is charged with a number of offenses, including driving while intoxicated, refusing to submit to chemical testing, second-degree evading, obstruction, resisting arrest, and many motor vehicle infractions. While awaiting legal procedures, he was placed in the
Ocean County Jail.Ramirez-Hernandez was accused of evading arrest by flight and obstruction. He was later freed, and a court appearance is planned for a later time.
According to Police Chief Gregory H. Meyer, the case emphasizes the advantages of contemporary policing techniques as well as the risks associated with eluding law enforcement.
Meyer stated, "This episode emphasizes the perils connected with running from police authorities." "Our drone program continues to enhance officer efficiency and safety, enabling officers to swiftly and safely locate suspects in difficult areas."
After Cruz was arrested, U.S. immigration authorities filed a detainer against him, according to the Ocean County Jail inmate database. Such a detainer suggests that federal authorities may request custody for possible immigration enforcement actions, even though his precise legal status is unknown.
