Coastal Watch: White Shark Spotted Off Jersey Shore Waters

White Shark Sighting Reported Near Jersey Shore Coastline

Coastal Watch: White Shark Spotted Off Jersey Shore Waters

On Monday night, a white shark identified by OCEARCH was seen miles off the shore between Ocean City and Sea Isle City.

At around 11 p.m. on Monday, Nori, a female shark that is almost nine feet tall, "pinged" off the shore. When their dorsal fin breaches water, sharks tagged by OCEARCH, a non-profit organization devoted to shark research, ping. To learn more about shark migration patterns, the organization tags sharks.

This spring migration season, she is the first to ping close to the Jersey Shore.
"Bright, curious, and full of life, Nori is a young white shark exploring the cold, rich waters of the North Atlantic," the shark's description states.

The Japanese word for seaweed inspired her name, Nori. On October 4, 2025, Nori was first tagged in Nova Scotia.

This time of year, Nori is traveling north to her summer feeding grounds in Atlantic Canada, just like other white sharks.

According to the organization's study, white sharks migrate northward in the summer to coastal areas around New England and Canada after spending the winter in warm seas off the southeast coast of the United States.
You can track Nori and other sharks via OCEARCH's shark tracker.
