Memorial Day Weekend Washout? Rainy, Chilly Weather Threatens New Jersey Holiday Plans
Beach plans, barbecues, and backyard parties across New Jersey may need a backup plan this Memorial Day weekend as forecasters are tracking a stretch of gloomy, wet, and unusually cool weather heading into the unofficial start of summer.
After several days of summer-like heat earlier this week, temperatures are expected to tumble significantly as a stubborn storm system brings periods of soaking rain, thick cloud cover, and breezy conditions from Saturday through Memorial Day Monday.
Forecasters say the wettest part of the weekend will likely arrive between Saturday afternoon and Sunday, when steady rain and occasional downpours could impact travel, outdoor events, shore traffic, and holiday gatherings. Some areas could pick up over an inch of rainfall by the time the system moves out.
Temperatures are also expected to feel much cooler than earlier this week’s near-90 degree heat. Highs across much of New Jersey and the Northeast may struggle to get out of the upper 50s and low 60s at times, especially along the coast where an onshore breeze will add to the chilly feel.
Even Memorial Day itself may remain damp and cloudy, although some forecasts suggest lighter rain and gradual improvement later Monday into Tuesday. Still, beachgoers heading to the Jersey Shore should prepare for rough surf, chilly ocean temperatures, and unsettled skies throughout much of the holiday weekend.
Meteorologists say the pattern is part of a larger storm track impacting much of the East Coast, with widespread showers and thunderstorms expected from the Gulf Coast through the Northeast.
Despite the disappointing holiday forecast, the rainfall could help ease ongoing dry conditions and improve drought concerns that have affected parts of the region this spring.
Tips for Memorial Day Weekend Plans
Keep rain gear handy if attending parades or outdoor events
Expect slower travel times heading to shore towns
Check local event schedules for weather-related changes
Be cautious of rough surf and cold ocean water temperatures
Have indoor backup plans ready for cookouts and gatherings
