MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A 26-year-old Manchester Township woman suffered serious injuries Monday morning after the electric scooter she was riding collided with an SUV along Route 37, according to local authorities.
The crash occurred shortly after 6:15 a.m. at the intersection of Route 37 and Buckingham Drive. Police identified the injured rider as Sabrina Hauge, who was transported to
Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. As of Monday evening, she remained in critical but stable condition.
Investigators said Hauge was operating an e-scooter westbound along the shoulder of Route 37 when she approached the Buckingham Drive intersection. At the same time, a white 2017 Chevrolet Suburban driven by 24-year-old Toms River resident Anner Galvan-Vasquez was traveling west on Route 37.
According to a preliminary investigation, Hauge arrived at the intersection before the SUV and attempted to cross Route 37. During the maneuver, the scooter struck the passenger side of the Suburban as it continued through the intersection. Authorities said the scooter's handlebar initially hit the vehicle's front passenger-side fender before both the rider and scooter made contact with the passenger-side mirror and doors.
The impact threw Hauge from the scooter, causing her to land in the left westbound travel lane. Police noted that she was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Galvan-Vasquez was not injured and stopped his vehicle approximately 500 feet beyond the collision site, authorities said.
Manchester police reported that a traffic signal controls the intersection. Early findings suggest that failure to obey a traffic signal and improper crossing of the intersection were significant factors contributing to the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing and is being led by Patrolman Michael O'Hara of the
Manchester Township Police Department's Traffic Safety Section.
Emergency personnel from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Services,
South Toms River First Aid Squad, Robert Wood Johnson EMS, and the New Jersey Department of Transportation Diversion Team assisted at the scene.
