After sitting empty for years, the former Food Town building on Route 37 in Toms River is preparing for a new chapter.
Restaurant Depot, a wholesale supplier that serves restaurants, caterers, food trucks, and other food-service businesses, has received the approvals needed to move into the long-vacant space at the Toms River Center shopping plaza. The property is located along Route 37 near the Route 166 intersection, a highly visible commercial corridor in the township.
The project has been in the works for several months. Restaurant Depot previously submitted plans to the Toms River Planning Board seeking permission to establish a warehouse-style store at the site. With approvals now secured, the company is one step closer to bringing its business to Ocean County.
The upcoming store will be Restaurant Depot’s first location in Ocean County. The company already operates multiple locations throughout New Jersey, supplying food-service professionals with bulk ingredients, beverages, equipment, and kitchen essentials.
Known for its membership-based, cash-and-carry model, Restaurant Depot is a popular destination for restaurant owners and food entrepreneurs looking to purchase products in large quantities. The warehouse format allows businesses to source everything from fresh produce and meats to cookware and cleaning supplies under one roof.
Although an opening date has not yet been announced, the development is welcome news for local residents and business leaders who have watched the former supermarket property remain vacant for an extended period. The arrival of a new tenant is expected to bring renewed activity to the shopping center and put a prominent piece of Route 37 real estate back into use.
As preparations move forward, many in the community will be keeping an eye on the site as Restaurant Depot works toward opening its doors in Toms River.
