One Person Dies After Drowning at Unprotected New Jersey Beach
A swimmer died this week after being rescued from the ocean at an unguarded section of Sandy Hook beach.
According to Daphne Yun, spokesperson for the Gateway National Recreation Area, National Park Service lifeguards, park rangers, and emergency medical technicians responded to Beach B at Sandy Hook on Thursday following reports of a water rescue. Crews from Sea Bright Fire Rescue and Hackensack Meridian Health paramedics also assisted at the scene.
Witnesses reported that two people had entered the water when one began yelling after their companion disappeared beneath the surface.
A bystander rescued the distressed swimmer from the water and began performing CPR while waiting for emergency crews to arrive, according to ABC7.
Despite the efforts of the bystander and first responders, the swimmer was later pronounced dead at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, said Gateway National Recreation Area spokesperson Daphne Yun.
The victim’s name has not been released as authorities work to notify the person’s family.
According to the National Park Service, swimming is not permitted at Beach B in Sandy Hook.
