11-Year-Old Girl Killed in Berkeley Township Electric Dirt Bike Crash

BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. — An 11-year-old girl was killed Wednesday after the electric dirt bike she was riding as a passenger on collided with a pickup truck in Berkeley Township, authorities said.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said the crash happened at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Aug. 26 near the intersection of Moorage Avenue and Sherman Avenue.

According to investigators, an electric dirt bike operated by an 11-year-old boy with an 11-year-old girl as a passenger was traveling north on Sherman Avenue when it failed to stop at a posted stop sign at the intersection with Moorage Avenue.

The dirt bike entered the intersection and struck the driver’s side door of a Ford F-250 pickup truck traveling westbound on Moorage Avenue, officials said.

Both children were injured in the crash.

The 11-year-old boy was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he was treated for his injuries and later released.

The 11-year-old girl was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River. She was pronounced dead at the hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the Ford F-250 remained at the scene following the collision. Authorities said the driver had a valid license and showed no signs of impairment.

The investigation is being conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Berkeley Township Police Department and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.

The crash remains under investigation. No additional information was immediately released.
