Drivers Stranded After Flash Floods Sweep New Jersey

Severe thunderstorms moving across New Jersey Thursday afternoon have triggered flash flooding, road closures and widespread power outages in communities across the state.

According to the National Weather Service, flash flooding was reported shortly after 2 p.m. along both directions of Route 36 in Keyport near Broad Street.

State highway officials reported that two of the three northbound lanes were closed, while all southbound lanes were shut down because of the flooding.

Video posted to social media around 2:20 p.m. Thursday showed multiple vehicles stalled on the Garden State Parkway near the Route 9 and Route 35 interchange, close to Exit 125 in the Parlin section of Sayreville.

Video shared online showed numerous vehicles stranded in floodwaters along Route 35 in Keyport, near the Garden State Parkway, at approximately 2:25 p.m. Thursday.

Rainfall has been especially heavy in some parts of New Jersey. Data from the Rutgers NJ Weather Network showed South Harrison in Gloucester County had received 5.24 inches of rain by 3:45 p.m.

Nearby Logan Township had recorded 4.17 inches of rainfall by Thursday afternoon — nearly an entire month’s average rainfall in just a matter of hours.
