Michael “Big Mike” Desmond will be remembered for the larger-than-life presence, laughter, stories, and love he shared so freely with his family, friends, and community.
Mike was the devoted husband of Maureen and the proud and loving father of Brendan and Derek. He was the beloved son of Steve and Carol Desmond and brother of Meghan; as well as son-in-law to Paul and Diane Hegadorn and brother-in-law to Maribeth and Michael Hegadorn. Above all else, his family was the center of his world. He was a dedicated husband and dad who took tremendous pride in the people he loved and in being there for them.
Known affectionately by so many as “Big Mike,” he had a way of making every gathering more fun simply by being there. He was the life of the party, a natural storyteller, and someone whose stories could keep a room laughing long after they had heard the story, even if they’ve heard the story before. Fun, loving, generous, and unmistakably himself, Mike was the kind of person people were drawn to. He made friends easily, cared deeply, and was loved by so many throughout the community.
Baseball was one of Mike’s greatest passions. A diehard New York Yankees fan, his love for the game went far beyond watching his favorite team. He was deeply committed to Brick Little League and to helping its players learn, grow, compete, and succeed. His impact went beyond Brick Little League as he went on to serve as the Little League District 18 Administrator. He gave generously of his time and energy because he believed in the game, but even more importantly, he believed in the kids who played it. The impact he made through Brick Little League will continue in the players, families, and friendships he inspired along the way.
Mike’s absence will be felt deeply by his family, his friends, the Little League community, and the countless people fortunate enough to know him. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories, unforgettable stories, plenty of laughter, and a legacy rooted in family, friendship, baseball, and showing up for the people who mattered to him.
A viewing was held on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, from 3 pm to 7 pm at Weatherhead Young Funeral Home, 885 Mantoloking Road, Brick, NJ 08723.
