For K9 Loki, an Entire Community Answered the Call

A Community United for One Working Dog

On Monday afternoon, during what began as a routine training exercise in South Toms River, Sgt. William Kosh, Jr. watched his partner—K9 Loki—suddenly collapse from a severe medical emergency. In an instant, the day shifted from training to a fight for Loki’s life.

K9 Loki was rushed to Garden State Veterinary Specialists (GSVS) in Toms River, where veterinary professionals immediately began emergency treatment. Their swift actions stabilized Loki enough to determine the next critical step: he needed to be transported to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital for advanced specialty care and emergency surgical intervention.

For K9 Loki — An Entire Community Answered the Call. 🐾💙 On Monday afternoon, Sgt. William Kosh, Jr. and K9 Loki were on a training exercise in South Toms River when Loki suddenly suffered a serious medical emergency. K9 Loki was immediately transported to Garden State Veterinary Specialists (GSVS) in Toms River, where veterinary professionals began emergency treatment and worked diligently to stabilize him.

Recognizing the urgency, South Toms River Police Department K9 Handler Dominick Palino contacted Toms River Police K9 Handler Christopher Inglis and requested activation of the K9 Kona Medevac Protocol through the New Jersey State Police. What happened next was extraordinary.

An entire network of people, agencies, and disciplines mobilized—without hesitation—for one working dog.

A Chain of Care Without Boundaries

The South Toms River Police Department extends its deepest gratitude to every individual and agency who played a role in Loki’s rescue:

  • Garden State Veterinary Specialists — for receiving Loki, initiating emergency treatment, stabilizing him, and setting the foundation for his continued fight.
  • Red Bank Veterinary Hospital — for preparing to receive Loki, continuing advanced stabilization, and providing the emergency intervention he urgently needed.
  • New Jersey State Police ROIC & Aviation Bureau — for answering the activation request and making a complex, time‑sensitive transport possible.
  • JEMSTAR’s SouthSTAR Flight Team — Pilot SFC William Munyon, SFC John Steet, Flight Nurse Ryan Paynter, and Flight Paramedic Michelle Idler — for becoming part of Loki’s team when every minute mattered.
  • Toms River Police Department Communications Division — for coordinating radio traffic, resources, and communication that kept the mission moving.
  • Toms River Police EMS CSOs Brendan Halpin and Nick Vitagliano, and K9 Handlers Anthony Carafa and Christopher Inglis — for stepping in immediately and doing whatever was needed.
  • Silverton EMS, Silverton Fire Department, and Robert Wood Johnson EMS — for their support throughout the emergency.
  • RWJBH Paramedic Supervisor Joseph Giberson, Paramedic FTO Tracy Connellan, and Paramedic John Cavallone — for providing critical medical and operational support during Loki’s transport.

And to every person whose name may not appear here but who answered a phone, keyed a radio, moved equipment, opened a door, cleared a path, or simply asked, “What do you need?” — your contribution mattered.

Why Programs Like K9 Kona Medevac Exist

Working dogs like Loki spend their careers standing beside their handlers, entering environments we ask them to enter, and serving communities with unwavering loyalty. On Monday, it was our turn to show up for him.

What followed was bigger than any single department or agency. It was law enforcement, EMS, aviation, communications, fire service, veterinary medicine, and the working‑dog community united by one mission:

Get Loki where he needed to be.

There were no jurisdictional boundaries. No agency lines. Just a working dog in trouble—and the people determined to help him.

A Bond Few Understand

For Sgt. Kosh, watching his partner endure a medical emergency of this magnitude is something only handlers truly understand. The bond between a K9 and handler is family—built on trust, loyalty, and shared service.

Tonight, the South Toms River Police Department asks the community to keep K9 Loki, Sgt. Kosh, and the entire K9 Unit in their thoughts as Loki continues his recovery.

And to everyone who commented, called, texted, prayed, or sent well wishes:

Thank you for showing up.

K9 Loki is now home, resting, and expected to make a full recovery.
