Sunshine Returns: NJ Set for a Drier Week After Storms

The rain has moved out of New Jersey — at least for now.

Skies are expected to gradually clear Sunday evening as the low-pressure system responsible for the wet weather moves away. A cold front will pass through overnight, bringing a slight chance of showers before a stretch of dry and comfortable weather settles in.

Heavy overnight rainfall caused flooding and power outages across parts of the Garden State early Sunday. Northern New Jersey was particularly affected, with some roads closed because of flooding and several vehicles becoming stranded, prompting emergency crews to carry out a number of rescues.

Conditions began improving Sunday afternoon as clouds started to break and skies cleared.

According to the National Weather Service, a cold front will move from north to south across New Jersey late Sunday night into early Monday. The front could bring a few scattered showers and possibly an isolated thunderstorm before moving out.

High pressure will move in from the west on Monday, ushering in mostly clear skies along with temperatures running cooler than normal for mid-September.

Most of New Jersey will see Monday highs in the 70s, while a few locations in South Jersey could approach 80 degrees. Northerly winds will bring in drier air and lower humidity, creating comfortable conditions across the state.

Clear skies Monday night will allow temperatures to fall sharply. By Tuesday morning, inland areas of New Jersey could see temperatures drop into the 40s.

Tuesday is expected to stay dry, featuring partly to mostly sunny skies and afternoon temperatures mainly in the lower 70s, which is a bit cooler than average for this time of year.

As high pressure gradually shifts offshore on Wednesday, a warming trend will begin, with temperatures climbing into the upper 70s and lower 80s across much of New Jersey.

Humidity levels are also expected to rise Wednesday as winds shift from the south. Another cold front moving in from the west could bring showers and thunderstorms back to the region Thursday into Friday.

According to the National Weather Service, there is a possibility of heavier rainfall late in the week and into next weekend, although the forecast details are expected to become clearer over the coming days.
