New Suspect Charged in 2022 Jersey Shore Parkway Shooting

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Authorities have brought new charges in connection with a 2022 shooting on the Garden State Parkway that left a man injured.

A juvenile delinquency complaint was filed Monday against an individual accused of two counts of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose stemming from the Jan. 12, 2022, shooting, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor.

The individual was a juvenile at the time of the shooting, so authorities are withholding the person's identity, Billhimer said.
The new charges come more than four years after another individual was charged in connection with the case.

William B. Sabo of Berkeley Township, who was 22 at the time, was arrested several days after the shooting and charged with attempted homicide, as well as weapons and drug offenses. Authorities said a search of his home and a vehicle uncovered two firearms and 2.5 ounces of marijuana.

Court records show Sabo later pleaded guilty to weapons possession and drug charges. The attempted homicide charge against him was subsequently dismissed, authorities said.

According to authorities, the incident began with an argument at the Exxon Mobil station at Route 37 and Commonwealth Boulevard in Manchester. The victim left the station in a vehicle and headed toward the Garden State Parkway, with a Dodge Charger following behind, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

While the victim was traveling on the Parkway, the driver of the Dodge Charger allegedly fired several shots at the vehicle. One bullet struck the victim in the leg, prosecutors said.

A passenger in the victim’s vehicle drove him to Community Medical Center in Toms River. He was later transferred to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he received treatment and was eventually released, authorities said.

The prosecutor’s office said the shooting has remained under investigation since Jan. 12, 2022.

Authorities also clarified that the vehicle searched at Sabo’s home was not the Dodge Charger involved in the shooting.

“Continuing investigation since that date has led to the identification of the subject individual as the driver of the Dodge Charger who fired at the victim’s vehicle,” the prosecutor’s office said. The individual is currently being held in custody on an unrelated matter.
