Dog Rescued from a Burning Three-Story House at the Jersey Shore
A retired firefighter and his son entered the residence before firefighters arrived and determined that no one was inside. A neighbor also confirmed the home was unoccupied but said a dog remained trapped inside.
When firefighters reached the scene, they found flames consuming all three floors of the house, according to officials.<
Authorities said the dog was rescued, provided with oxygen, and transported to a local veterinary office for additional care.
No other injuries were reported, and firefighters brought the blaze under control within about 30 minutes.
The Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office determined that the fire was accidental and was caused by a golf cart that had been exposed to floodwaters during the weekend flooding. The golf cart was parked beneath the home’s upper-level decks, allowing the flames to quickly travel up the exterior and spread into the interior, according to the fire department.
Several neighboring homes also sustained damage to their exteriors.
The fire department urged residents not to use or charge any golf carts, e-scooters, e-bikes, or other battery-powered devices that have been exposed to floodwater.
Fire Official Jacob M. Spiegel advised residents to move any potentially damaged equipment away from buildings and structures. He also recommended contacting the manufacturer for guidance before attempting to use or recharge the equipment. If a battery begins smoking, overheating, or producing unusual noises, residents should leave the area immediately and call 911.
