A heartbreaking investigation has ended in tragedy after the body of 10-year-old Jalayshia Alford, a missing girl from West Philadelphia, was discovered inside a vehicle in Lindenwold, New Jersey.

Authorities confirmed Thursday, November 5, that the child’s remains were found inside the trunk of a car near the Stonington Court Apartments in Camden County, bringing an extensive search that lasted more than a week to a devastating conclusion.

According to authorities, Alford had been missing since October 26. She was last seen at a home on the 500 block of North Simpson Street in West Philadelphia, where she had been living with her foster family.

The disappearance prompted a widespread search involving Philadelphia police, FBI agents, and community members. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage, interviewed witnesses, and searched multiple locations as they worked to determine what happened to the young girl.

Foster Mother Charged in Connection With Child’s Death

During a news conference Thursday, prosecutors announced that the child’s foster mother, Carprice Williams, had been charged with murder, endangering a child, and other related offenses.

Investigators said surveillance footage from October 26 showed the child’s body being moved from the Philadelphia residence in a bag.

Authorities later followed investigative leads and information from witnesses that helped them locate the vehicle in Lindenwold.

According to prosecutors, a medical examiner determined that Alford died from blunt force trauma and ruled her death a homicide.

Community Left Heartbroken

The discovery has devastated family members and members of the West Philadelphia community who spent days hoping the young girl would be found safe.

Neighbors and volunteers participated in search efforts, distributed missing-person flyers, and shared information in hopes of bringing Jalayshia home.

Following news of her death, community members gathered outside the home where she had been living, leaving balloons and remembering the young girl.

Officials have expressed condolences to the family while emphasizing the importance of protecting children and ensuring their safety.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue working to establish the full circumstances surrounding Jalayshia’s death.
