A 19-year-old Lifeguard Died, 6 Others Struck By Lightning in Seaside Park
A 19-year-old lifeguard died late this afternoon on the 21st Ave beach at South Seaside Park, according to emergency services sources. Six other people were hurt. Just north of Island Beach State Park lies this location.
Officials said lightning struck at least six individuals on a beach at South Seaside Park. Ages 15-56 years of age were those who were injured suffering from headaches and dizziness.
According to Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy, the event occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m., and CPR was being administered to one of the victims.
The Berkeley Township Police Department, which guards South Seaside Park, said it was "investigating claims of lightning strikes" and would provide more information as it became available.
