A Five-Car Pileup Forced the Closure of Route 9

Route 9 was closed for approximately an hour on Thursday morning due to a five-car collision, according to Toms River Police Department.  About 7 a.m., the driver of the first car, who was heading south on Route 9, was blinded by the headlights of a car heading north and swerved off the road near Swain Avenue, smashing into and destroying a utility pole, according to Police Chief Mitch Little. The collision caused wires to fall into the road.

According to Little, the drivers of the second car heading south and the other car heading north were both unable to avoid running into the fallen debris and pole in the road.

According to the chief, a fourth southbound vehicle impacted the third southbound vehicle in the rear, but the third was able to stop before hitting the other cars or the pole. According to him, a passenger in the fourth car reported having headache pain and was sent to Community Medical Center.

Two of the five automobiles required towing from the scene due to damage.

There were summonses issued to the driver of the car that collided with the pole.

After roughly an hour, Route 9 between Route 571 and Whitty Road was closed, but repairs were underway there even after traffic resumed.
