A Global Outage has Struck Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp
On Monday, Facebook-owned properties such as Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger experienced widespread disruptions.
According to DownDetector, the problems began at 11:45 a.m. ET and affected people all across the world. According to DownDetector, the outages looked to be subsiding by 12:30 p.m. ET, however tens of thousands of customers were still reporting issues.
The Facebook site returned a message that stated, "This site can't be reached," just after noon.
Users stated that the social network and its apps began displaying error messages before noon Eastern time. According to downdetector.com, which monitors web traffic and site activity, all of Facebook's family of apps — Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger — had outage reports.
Apps go down all the time, but it's unusual for such a big number of interconnected apps at the world's top social media company to be down at the same time. The company has been working to combine the core technical infrastructure of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram for some years.
In a series of tweets, John GrahamCumming, CTO at Cloudflare, a web infrastructure company, said the problem was likely caused by Facebook's servers not allowing people to connect to their websites like Instagram and WhatsApp.
Security experts said the disruption could be the result of an internal mistake, though sabotage by an insider would be theoretically possible.
