Could a major blizzard or a heavy rainstorm hinder one of the busiest travel weeks of the year? According to weather experts, the answer is perhaps — but it's too early to say for sure.
Forecasters with the National Weather Service's regional office in New Jersey said a storm system may form in the Great Lakes region and hit the eastern United States early next week, perhaps late Monday or early Tuesday, when many people would be traveling for Thanksgiving holiday celebrations.
AccuWeather forecasters said the storm's exact date and direction have yet to be determined, but they are keeping an eye on two possible possibilities based on the storm's path.
Along with the likelihood of rain and snow, forecasters are afraid that if the storm deepens, widespread high winds might develop throughout the eastern area on Monday and Tuesday.
High winds might develop in one scenario as temperatures plummet and the storm intensifies through the northeast. Monday and Tuesday could bring mostly heavy rain and perhaps severe thunderstorms to the state.
Another possibility, according to experts, is that the storm would develop more slowly across the Midwest from Sunday to Monday, then shift northeast on Tuesday, bringing a spell of heavy rain, snow, and high winds to New Jersey.
High winds are a danger in all situations, according to AccuWeather, and might intensify quickly enough to be categorized as a bomb cyclone.
Steven DiMartino, the CEO of the private NY NJ PA Weather forecasting organization, agreed that it is too early to predict whether New Jersey would have snow or rain.
When it comes to vacation travel, DiMartino advises that people keep an eye on the storm and be prepared for delays if it increases next week.
