At the main branch of the Ocean County Library in Toms River, a hawk that had been perched in the windows, appears to have fled the structure.
An exhaustive search of the library on Friday by staff members and avian experts yielded no results, according to a spokesperson for the library system named Sherri Taliercio.
Taliercio added that when the hawk was first spotted inside the structure on Monday night, it was initially identified as a first-year male red-tailed hawk.
The officials never got close enough to the creature to make a firm determination that it was a Cooper hawk, she added.
Taliercio claimed that the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife recommended avian experts to decide on a strategy for safe rescue and evacuation. Library officials talked with them.
She stated that as a safety measure, the branch was closed Monday night, all day Tuesday, and once more Thursday afternoon into Friday as avian experts set humane traps and facilities personnel looked for signs of the bird's locations in crawl spaces above ceilings.
On Friday, they conducted a comprehensive search but discovered no trace of the bird.
The library is optimistic that all measures taken to keep the hawk safe and help it leave the premises were effective, according to Taliercio. The library building was visited by hawks both yesterday evening and this morning.
There is no information on whether he borrowed any books before leaving.
